Kristen Bell didn’t careen into Traverse City in a speeding car like her character in the offbeat, unpredictable road movie “Hit & Run.” But her visit was almost as fast as a car chase.

“I literally landed two hours ago and I leave in an hour and a half,” said the Huntington Woods native, who flew to her home state Thursday from Pittsburgh, where she’s working on an indie movie.

Bell came to Traverse City for a sneak preview of “Hit & Run,” which the festival guide describes as “a rollicking thrill ride that combines the intensity of ‘Drive’ with the outrageous comedy of ‘The Hangover’.” It screened Thursday night at the festival.

Bell stars in the movie with her fiance, Milford native Dax Shepard, who wrote the script and was a codirector.

Interesting detail: She pointed out that Shepard wrote most of the roles for friends of the couple. “This movie is our entire social circle basically,” Bell said.

The costars include Bradley Cooper as a hot-tempered bank robber, Tom Arnold as a bumbling federal marshal and Kristen Chenoweth as a college colleague of Bell’s character.

Bell said Shepard knows the strengths of his pals and kept them in mind while creating the script.” He knows when Tom Arnold is at his funniest. He knows that if you can get Tom in a scene and make him embarrassed, there’s nothing cuter. And he knows that if you get Kristen Chenoweth to say dirty words, it’s going to be really funny.”

“Hit & Run” is scheduled to open in metro Detroit on Aug. 24.
